Dr. Barbara Persons is a plastic, cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon committed to excellence. Dr. Persons opened Persons Plastic Surgery, Inc.'s Lafayette office in 2010 and took over the Cosmetic & Reconstructive Surgery Center on Moraga Road on March 31, 2011. Dr. Persons' practice offers cosmetic and reconstructive surgery for both women and men and is the culmination of 20 years of practice and service.
Following Vallecito Grammar School, Stanley Middle School and Acalanes High, Dr. Persons began studying for a career in medicine at University of California at San Diego, where she earned her degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Dr. Persons' education includes: UCSD, Dartmouth, University of Vermont Medical School, UC Davis, UNLV and "Ole Miss." In addition, Dr. Persons has had the oppurtunity to do clinical rotations at Stanford and UCSF. She was selected as Chief Resident at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Surgery. In August 2005, Dr. Persons was invited to do her Plastic Surgery Fellowship at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she became Chief Resident in 2008. She completed a fellowship in Breast, Aesthetic & Laser Surgery. Dr. Persons is highly experienced with aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery and body contouring (liposuction) and she especially enjoys the artistry involved in facial plastic surgery, including facial rejuvenation and fat grafting. She also specializes in helping moms get back their "pre-baby" body.
Dr. Persons has had the opportunity to work closely with some of the world's authorities in Plastic Surgery. She was an Adult Craniofacial Fellow in 2006 under Marcus Walkinshaw, MD, FACS; and a Breast Aesthetic Fellow under John B. McCraw, MD FACS in 2006.
The life of this Lafayette native was forever changed when she was involved in an auto accident that required fourteen reconstructive surgeries, many to restore her facial features. Dr. Persons saw firsthand the transformative ability a plastic surgeon had in her life by returning her broken face to the one she recognized as her own. Just recently Dr. Persons had the responsibility to repair a patient's face and skull following a violent crime. Once recovered, this man should be able to live his life without the constant reminder in the mirror of the violence he experienced. He even said his friends cannot believe he had a gunshot wound to the face.
Serving the community has always been a driving force in Dr. Persons' life. After her residency, she spent two years serving in the US Public Health Service Corps at Inscription House Health Center on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Northern Arizona. Eighty percent of her patients did not have electricity, running water or phones.
Dr. Persons speaks regularly at national conferences, has contributed to several medical textbooks and has had numerous publications. She recently wrote a chapter, "Breast Reconstruction uses the Autogenous Latissimus Dorsi Myocutaneous Flap" in the medical textbook entitled, Kuerer's Breast Surgical Oncology: McGraw Hill publishers.
Dr. Persons' community focus is further reflected by her office accepting most insurance coverage as well as supporting the plastic surgery emergencies at the numerous hospitals in the East Bay, including John Muir, San Ramon Regional and Kindred Hospital in San Leandro.
